Despite Trumps ravings and inaccuracies it does not give them a "free pass" to not make progress (aka increasing spending towards the 2%).

Trump will be gone soon enough, so what excuse then for the members? The same ones they made when Bush and Obama more diplomatically urged them to not be freeloaders?
They were not offering excuses. They were, and are staying the course with the 2014 agreement (diplomatically agreed) and the 2% goal by 2024. Recently France and Germany had already assured they would reach the goal by then, so what was the point of going there to insult them, and lie about what was agreed upon?

I demand Trump lower our commitment to 0.005% It would still be FAR MORE than what those chumps are paying..FOR THEIR DEFENSE

the European Union has a GDP of 17,308,862 .....we have a GDP of 19,390,600. You think they can put up more of their cost of defense.

Trump doesn't want to withdraw from NATO, he wants them for once to carry their load.

you say ignorant things that Russia can invade European countries when their GDP is only 1,527,469 #12 in the world behind South Korea, Canada, Italy, Brazil, India, and Japan.
Great post. Exactly right.

Trump has not advocated ending NATO, or withdrawing the US from NATO.

There are so many legitimate criticisms of Donald Trump and his actions. Why is it that those who feel resentment towards him and his adminstration constantly attack him based on utterly false premises, such as that he is against NATO, or that he wants to wIthdraw the US frim NATO?

Trump's demeanor at the news conference seemed like someone took him behind the woodshed and took him across their knee. Some reporters are reporting that he got what he already had when he was citizen Trump.

We could annex the Canadian provinces as new states.

I would like to see NATO disbanded. The Warsaw pact is long gone, and that's what NATO was designed to counter. There is no need for a NATO to counter Russia. Military alliances just increase the likelihood of war and militarization (see the alliances that led to WW1). Trump's rhetoric is ridiculous but part of me is hoping it leads to the end of NATO.

It has been a joke to keep such a strong presence in Europe for decades.

The EU has 512 million people with a GDP of $16.5 Trillion
Russia has 147 million people with a GDP of $1.7 Trillion
The USA has 323 million people with a GDP of $19.4 Trillion

Why does the EU need the USA to help protect itself from Russia?

Look at France - France has nukes, have recently reduced their military expenditures - which breaks the agreement that they freely entered into with NATO - countries under 2% of GDP spending on military weren't to make any cuts - so France is saying that they would rather spend money on their own people and not rack up as much debt than worry about a Russia that won't invade them, because they have nukes.

Why can't the US say if France isn't worried about getting invaded, we shouldn't be worried about them getting invaded either...peel back spending and bases in Europe?
^^^^This.

I don't understand why that's not Trump's focus in the first place.

EXCEPT for the fact that the military are advising against reduction for security reasons or whatever reasons.

Why would U.S. withdrawal lead to the end of NATO?

I see why the leftists are losing their mind now that Trump calls out nu-male Trudeau over it. It's also another losing proposition for them come election time.
Shameful that someone lecturing Canada knows NOTHING about it's political structure or even how NATO is run!!

How can anyone take what you say seriously?
