Imagine that. The headline reads like something Trump would say that is outraging the Left but there it is a quote from a very popular Democrat President.

We should be questioning our contributions to NATO and they should be making sure that each country that is a member is paying their fair share. It is easy to say they are but are they? Trump questioned that and is attacked. If the countries pledged 2% then they should be paying their share.

The thing is does America need NATO? We certainly don't need their boots on our ground and I wonder how much of the heavy lifting they are doing around the world that otherwise our troops would be doing?

Trump is smart to question them.

Get us out of NATO. Germany is now Russia's best friend.

Exactly -- so the complaint we Americans should have is not with NATO - but with our own govt.

If we think EU is not looking after themselves -- get out and see what happens.

BUT BUT BUT

reality -- Americans aren't there for the EU.........that's why they just don't pack up and leave.

Pretty much every US president has tried to get NATO to pay more. Last was Obama who got them to agree to the 2% goal by 2024. The OPs article explains why Trump's approach is a dangerous / reckless one.

The contributions from each member is to maintain their own national defense, which US will do with or without NATO. The other nations do as well, they just don't pour as much money into it.

It’s just funny how U.S. Presidents have been saying this same thing for the last 6 decades, and yet next to nothing has been done about it.

Yes, lets pull the US out of NATO.

Watch their dollar collapse, and US interests rates skyrocket.

Russia can expand a little more, EU defense spending increase while purchasing less and less from US manufactures instead increase spending in their own defense industry.

US becoming a regular country again, instead of the Superpower it is today.

I tis naive to believe that the only reason USA has set up military bases in Europe is to protect the Europeans.

If that was the case, why wouldn't Trump pull out last year.

Because it i serves the USA to have bases in Europe...that's why.

It serves Europe more....Russia still has a legitimate bone to pick with Germany. Because of Germany millions of Soviets citizens died. In their eyes Germany still hasn't answered enough for that. WE were what kept the Soviets from taking the rest of Germany. Our troops and bases. Now it's time for Germany to pony up and pay for their own security.
I have no bone with England, but pretty much the rest of them are dead beats.
