Starbucks in order to be green wants to severely cut back on straw use and plans to eventually eliminate all single use straws.
So Starbucks is coming out with new single use plastic lids that make it easier to drink from without a straw. The problem is Starbuck's new lids that don't require a straw use more plastic than the old lids and straws combined.
Visually you think you are using less plastic, because there is no longer a straw, but the lid is bigger and you wind up using more plastic.
Starbucks justifies it saying that straws won't be recycled and the lids will, but as Reason points out, this point is dubious.
Disappointing. The idea is that this inspires others to take further steps, but it's still only a PR stunt if it doesn't actually reduce plastic consumption at all.
"While plastic straws are by no means the largest source of plastic trash (estimated to be 0.03 percent of total plastic waste by mass), they represent a first step toward reduction. Hence, one can argue that while focusing on plastic straws may be going after one of the smaller culprits, it is the gateway for further conservation."

It's a step in the right direction.
You folks are just determined not to let anything change and for us to keep making the same kind of deadly trash.
Seriously - the new plastic lids will be placed, for the most part, in the recyclable bins. The straws were just thrown in the trash.
The 'increase' in plastic used will be negated by more 'plastic' being recycled.
If you folks had it your way we would all still be going to the bathroom in outhouses because those dang sewer systems create more waste.
Starbucks played the game with a publicity stunt that got them a lot of free advertising and publicity. Well done. The fact that it creates more waste and requires the extraction of more oil-really doesn't matter.
Well Starbucks is a Loony Lefty company and they can justify just about anything to themselves and their customers so they can give each other a pat on the back.
