Combine that with Russia having strict gun laws...

1. Russia has gun laws that would make California and NY jealous.
2. If. IF Russia were to benefit from anything via NRA... Trump and Obamas sanctions against them, would have been lifted and we would have Kalashnikov and Molot firearms.
They're no longer imported due to sanctions.
So really. What does the NRA stand to gain from Russian assistance?

It wasn't about the NRA, they were just a vehicle. Read through the Affidavit below,, it has details of her emails and other conversations. She was directed by Alexander Torshin Russian, central bank governor who was previously sanctioned in April. They have been investigating her since 2015.
One of Butina's messages to Torshin:
"Unrelated to specific campaigns, I have been very involved in securing a very private line of communications between the Kremlin and key GOP leaders through of all the conduits, the NRA"
Maria Butina a Washington-based pro-gun activist affiliated with the National Rifle Association (NRA) has been charged with spying in the US for Russia.
Clearly part of the larger program to influence the voting public and sway elections. This comes out while Putin is denying that they have done anything.
