This deal is the opposite of Trump is doing. TPP would have removed 90% of tariffs, but of course Trump opposed that too.
When Europe gets Japanese cars tariff-free, it pretty much eliminates the demand for US made cars in EU.
I believe the goal by Trump doing these tariffs is to force the other parties to the table and hammer out something that eliminates the tariffs on both sides like what Japan and the EU are doing. Of course if that fails to happen he will plunge us into a deep recession.
Regarding TPP Trump, Bernie and Hillary were all against the TPP. Of course Hillary started out being for it and might have switched back after the election. It was not popular among voters.
When I make a business deal I look at the risk / reward ratio. The upside has to be many times greater than the downside for me to pull the trigger. So this trade war the upside is fairer trade and probably a modest boost to GDP. The downside is a massive recession. The downside is much worse than the upside.
Two: Have you ever been to either Europe or Japan? I have several times and you will find there are very few American cars in either country. Why...high tariffs (10% v 2.5%), registration cost and high insurances.
Yes, I lived in Europe. They have tariffs on Japanese cars too, and yet they are very common. Going forward they will have even less US made cars.
Oh please....Canada has been dumping lumber into the US for years and years long before Trump. Why do think so many mills in the NW has closed? Why are the remaining US mills mostly owned by Canadians? Why are our logs shipped overseas by these Canadian owners? Duh...
Again, it will cost $10 000 more to build a 3 br house because of the trade war. I guess you are ok with that.

Well, Trump didn't hammer out a deal, but EU and Japan did, and Japan and China did, and those deals do not include US. Trump sees EU as a foe, so don't expect too many deals with them.

Oh please..the tariffs haven't even been put into effect yet... so you are riding a dead horse on that issue....I think inflation has more to do with higher cost. House building cost have been on the rise for years, long before Trump. Probably more to do to varies regulation and and higher add-on fees like water and sewer hook-ups.

The lumber tariffs against Canada were put into effect last year.

The Trump administration’s tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber are pushing up the cost of wood, claims the U.S.-based National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), adding approximately USD $9,000 to the cost of single-family homes in the United States.
The statement goes on to suggest that the 20 per cent tariffs on imported Canadian lumber, which were implemented last November, have also added as much as USD $3,000 to the average price of a multi-family unit.
Oh, and separate to that there are the 30% duties on Canadian newsprint imposed earlier this year
Quote:
In the past few months, the U.S. Commerce Department has put in place two sets of duties on producers and exporters of uncoated groundwood paper from Canada. The first, in January, ranged from 4.42 per cent to 9.93 per cent of the wholesale price after a preliminary determination that suppliers had received financial assistance from the Canadian government.
Then, in March, a separate preliminary finding by the Commerce Department resulted in anti-dumping duties of 22.16 per cent for some Canadian paper producers and exporters.
Together, the two sets of duties have raised the price of newsprint by about 30 per cent.
