That’s not the employers problem.

Actually, it is, to an extent. Fact is, you want to do business in a high cost area, such as NYC, you need to be prepared to pay more, and not just for employees.

I am fundamentally against minimum wage increases for economic reasons, but service would greatly improve if waitstaff were paid regular wages rather than relying on tips.

It's annoying going to a restaurant and having waiters act like desperate puppies that smile for no reason...just take my order and then bring my food and then bill without putting on the fake BFF facade. I don't blame them personally of course, it's what they have to do to survive.

You pay the prevailing wage to get employees of quality that you need. No government mandated minimum necessary. The market will find the balance. If pay is so low that they can't find any employees they will have to increase wages or go out of business.

Wonder how many restaurants will end up getting converted to luxury housing .

I see the same thing in L.A . Things are going more towards the fast casual model .. which mean less employees thus less cost to run .

This means less jobs for those that need them . Also when employers are forced to pay $15 hr they’ll be more picky in who they hire .

Also once it’s $15 then you’ll see the March for $20hr .... and so on .

No it isn't the employer's problem but local and state govt. can work towards raising the minimum wage to provide a better standard of living

New York City residents and New York state residents can voice their support or opposition to this policy in the voting booth.

In the mean time, folks can blame the raising of the minimum wage all they want but it is clear that the landlords and their increasing rents are the bigger issue.

And this may be somewhere in the this thread -- but the tipped wage in NYC is 7.50 right?

Right... And in NYC that is higher than, say, Pensacola, Florida. So, therefore, higher cost of living for the employees is indeed, the employers problem as well.

Restaurants have gotten away without paying their employees what they should for far too long anyways. My brother in law is a GM at a restaurant group in Memphis, and the owners make money hand over fist. He attributes that to the fact that they pay their employees $2.13 an hour. That, combined with cheap rent (pretty much everywhere in Memphis) and high profit margins, they became millionaires very quickly. Maybe that isn't the norm, but it is ridiculously stupid.

In my opinion, there is no reason to have a minimum wage....the market knows the right price for a given job at any point in time. Not happy making a low wage? Get a skill set that pays more!

Yes its a dumb law but its not going to destroy the industry. It will cause some dead weight loss until there is consolidation and pricing power in the industry. After that people will pay a little more and some will eat out less.
