The EU was already at the table, biut Trump scrapped attemps to further reduce tariffs via TTIP.

It should be moted that tariffs are less than 3% between the EU and US, and are very low to start withm so Trump is talking nonsense to start with.

You people are just downright insane. The goal the ENTIRE time was to get THEM to drop THEIR tariffs on us.

It definitely seems that Trump is putting on a big show with the EU tariffs........we'll see what the final deal holds.

The Independent is a respected British broadsheet.

Furthermore if TITP failed after several years of negotiations, how is Trump supposed to get a deal.

Trump doesn't stand a hope in hell of getting a trade deal wit the EU and he knows it, he has simply agreed to negotiations in order to kick potentially damaging tariffs in to touch. Negotiations acheived nothing last time and are even more unlikely to achieve anything under Trump.

TTIP was Americas best shot at reducing tariffs but that ship has now sailed.

It makes perfect sense to most people.

After spending months raving against the "global elites" and evils of globalism, increasing globalism is suddenly a great idea.

Both sides impose about 3% tariffs, so it sure looks like an artificial problem.

Create a "problem", and then take credit for cancelling it. That;s Donald Trump politics for you.

Trump might be doing a trade deal separately with Mexico. Interesting details. Supposedly Trudeau would prefer to destroy Canada's economy to please his far left constituents. Great, we'll get Mexico sorted out with a booming economy so fewer illegals come here but Canadians will flee to the US for jobs!

AMLO’s Jesus Seade, Minister Ildefonso Guajardo and Ambassador Robert Lighthizer are meeting again this Thursday to put the outline of a deal together; while Canada is sidelined from the discussion.
