Actually if you look at some of the numbers, the country may not be so divided.
33 of 50 governors are GOP 67 of 99 state legislative bodies are GOP-controlled.
The US House is GOP controlled
The US Senate is GOP controlled.
The US President is GOP
Adding these up, it comes to 102 of 152 state and federal entities are GOP-controlled. That's 67 percent, or a 2-1 GOP margin. It is of course true that presidential elections have been fairly evenly split since 2000, but in the big picture we are pretty united as a country--around the GOP!
The 2016 presidential election in particular was anomalous. We had controversial candidates, to say the least, from both of the major parties. I wrote in a vote for the first time in my life, and I've been voting a long time.
We're a center right country. We have been so since Ronald Reagan.
If a liberal, a socialist, or a democrat ever gets elected again I hope every facet of their life gets put under the microscope and made as miserable as possible.
What comes around goes around.
Um wasn't Obama given that treatment? Oh yeah, because it was only Fox and fringe right wing blogs doing that, it don't count... That said Trump's is 10x worse but partially because he puts himself in the situation to continually be under the microscope through idiotic, race baiting and downright false statements or tweets.
No, the division will continue and get worse. If there is a “blue wave” it will be a radical far left government that is brought in. Conservatives will not just accept this. The fun will really start when a state defies a federal law on guns, gays or socialist program. The red and blue in this country are just too far apart to coexist. Maybe the end of our union is the end result, maybe civil war or even just plain chaos. I don’t feel we can pull back from the edge and at this point we shouldn’t. I have no plans of compromising my freedoms or rights for perceived safety or to prevent delicate people from being offended. I also refuse to turn my destiny over to socialist programs. As far as I am concerned we have nothing to talk about. Donald Trump has nothing to do with this other than being elected as a result of these divisions. He is not the cause. This has been brewing for 50 years as the left has pushed unwanted change for decades. We are at a point where we conservatives will move no more for them. If the country must burn to stop them so be it.
I'm a moderate politically but as I see it, Obama spent 8 years dividing the country along racial/ethnic/religious lines. He undid a couple generations of progress and then we had two candidates to choose from in 2016 that were polarizing in a hate 'em or love 'em way. Currently the leading contenders on the Democrat side are a rather hateful intolerant lot towards anyone who is not far left. I do not see any moderate Democrats who might bring people together. So if the choice in 2020 is Trump and a far left zealot, the country will remain divided no matter who wins.

I fear that if we have another Democrat President, he or she will be worse than Obama or even Hillary. We're talking Maxine Waters level of crazy.
I don't know if our country can go through something like that without being ripped apart.

This is exactly what I think. When Obama won in 2008 I was not much disappointed because I thought it could be a chance to move forward to MLK's dream. Unfortunately he squandered the opportunity. In fact most polling showed us as more racially divided after his 8 years.
He knew exactly what he was doing with his reaction to Skip Gates, Trayvon Martin, and Michael Brown--sowing the seeds of division. If nothing else, his choice of 'go to guy' on race speaks volumes: Al Sharpton.

OTOH if the Democrats continue their move left and their embrace of socialism (Bernie, Ocasio Cortez, etc) they will win fewer and fewer elections, which would leave us more united, not more divided. If the numbers I posted above get to 75% (from the current 67%) the Democratic party becomes barely relevant.
