The fact is the media has been caught outright lying enough to give the term fake news some credibility. The GW Bush 60 minutes expose and the editing of the George Zimmerman 911 tape comes to mind.

Right now CNN main page is saying some nonsense about how Republicans "should panic" since it was a close race. How is that journalism? How about "GOP wins in Ohio" and leave your opinion and wet dreams out of it. It's a disgrace.
This should have not been a race which will basically end up in a virtual tie..barely plus +1
If Republicans barely can win a gerrymandered deep red district....this does not bond well for much closer races in November. The GOP is in trouble.
As has already been stated what is reported and how it is reported is often driven by a bias. More like half truths much of the time then outright lies.
This term fake news seems to be a popular phrase from trump and his followers, are the Forest fires that are being reported on not actually happening? did the Ohio elections not really happen and were a just made up story? was trumps visit to Russia and N Korea fake news?
Seems to me people are mistaking actual news for opinion pieces they dont like and thus calling it fake news,
1. the phrase "fake news" was used from three American newspapers in 1890 and 1891...so it is not a new term
2. Obama: ""We must guard against fake news"" November 2016
fake news is when an entity or journalist spins a story to lean one way, when the truth is something else
its like when the press and the liberals say "Bush vetoes veterans health bill".... meanwhile it was a tiny amendment on a DOT bill that had nothing to do with the VA.... but the press makes everyone think that Bush de-funded the VA...... that is "fake news" or spinning it to an untruth
both the right and the left do plenty of spinning and MAKING of 'fake news"
Your typical Trump supporter when you provide them with factual information:
