They shut down comments when people go ballistic not controversial, this site is no different than any other media site, there needs to be moderation otherwise it sny media source will digress into an insult fest.

A lot of the people on this forum are more insightful and roll with criticism better than professional journalists.

Your assertion that a lack of a comments section on news websites is some vast left wing conspiracy is what's fiction.

Why do you think unmoderated commenting would be a good thing? Are there vast waves of the American public who are secretly jonesing to let loose some f bombs on fellow commenters? Are we really feeling *that* repressed that we need to have the freedom to let insults rip on anyone we disagree with??

Get a grip.

LOL, comments are shut down when people can't be civil.

If there could be civil conservation them maybe they would allow it. But there is a lot of spam and a lot of trolls posting just to rile up people. And honestly, I'm not sure they are even Americans. They could be hackers wanting to further our divide.

Yes some real astute people on here like the Alex Jones and Sean Hannity listeners, they know solid reporting when they hear it.

If you don't agree with what I posted then have the decency to say what it is you disagree with. Otherwise you are just trolling. Having been on CD since 2007, you should know better.

If you have real concerns with an article -- a letter to the editor is the norm.

There is no guarantee EVER your letter will be made public.

Are you objecting to the fact you can't have public access to criticize the media outlet?

Why should comments always be allowed, and how is trust linked to the ability to comment? And if comments are allowed, am I to trust those who comment? When people write a book, there are other forums and outlets for people to discuss and comment. The media is no different. They can put in print (or online) their thoughts, and let the discussion be had elsewhere which it always does.
