Religion has radicalized American politics and seriously harmed the perception of science. This can be directly tied to the rise of the Christian Right in the 20th century. The response to the same question posed to Republican presidential candidates has changed over three election cycles, from 2008 to 2016: "Do you believe in Darwinian biological evolution?" In 2008, the majority answered yes. In 2012, there were notably less. In 2016? There was only one of 17 candidates who said he did—Jeb Bush, and even he began to backpedal as he answered.
Interesting video explaining how the infiltration of the religious right into politics has affected our educational progress in science:
I'm very surprised that Christian based religion is playing more of a role in politics today as it has in the past.
I remember hearing that everyone was really worried and concerned that with the election of JFK, a catholic that he would be taking his orders from the Vatican. Sounds a bit like the accusations that Trump takes his orders from Putin....
Still I thought the country as a whole was actually moving from religion. It seems that most millenials are staying away from religion. The only ones that are really devout to their god are the ever growing muslims.
I don't think religion should be tied to politics.

Oh yeah, sign me up with those guys. They aren't crazy like their statist peers on the Right who talk about dinosaurs being fake and the earth being 5,000 years old.

Sounds like someone is grasping at straws to me.
Americans are woefully uneducated when it comes to science. A closed mind - whether it be the result of religious fundamentalism or political extremism - is an empty mind.

Banning straws seems to be a real thorn is the sides of some folks. I truly find it amazing. And your math comment is totally out of context.
