What about normal-weight people who are unfit? Just curious.
Sounds to me like it's just bashing people for a medical condition (i.e., obesity). Economic arguments don't wash with me. Otherwise we should shame people doing extreme sports, or even skydiving, bungee jumping, rock climbing, etc. All those activites are an unnecessary risk with one's life. But I suppose those activities have more "sexy" visuals than obesity. So at the end of the day, it's basic aesthetic bigotry masquerading as economics.
You kinda missed the point in most of those articles. They aren't saying you can get thinner by joining the military, they're saying many people these days are too fat to join the military. If they're too fat to join the military, how can, and why should, they join the military? Do you want to give them heart attacks?
Studies have shown exercise has only a minimal effect on obesity. The big culprit is diet. Thus, your solution won't solve what you think it will.
Yes it sucks that Americans are fatter than ever but the military is not a weight loss get fit camp.
They will NOT accept you with pre-existing obesity related health conditions or morbid obesity. They will just laugh. Fat people do not do good in stressful environments. If the pushup and sit-ups don't get them, it will be the cardiovascular endurance.
Lol, half of the people of age to serve need safe spaces and warnings about trigger words. I can't even imagine.
Maybe it would help to mature and toughen them up. After all, unless Obama weeded out all the real/legit military drill sergeants and the like, they would learn very quickly how to obey orders and authority.
As I have previously noted, I was a huge fan of Richard M. Nixon, since (in 1973) I was 18 years old, and he was ridding us of the draft. I had no desire to be drafted to go off to Vietnam.
Now, at 63, and retired, I have no desire to see young men and women drafted to go off to fight, well, whomever you care to name.
Sure, if we, the United States of America, were 'attacked', and our 'way of life' threatened, then I would be for the draft again.
Of course, we are being 'attacked'. Yet, nowadays, the attacks are by some person with a computer, looking to compromise our election process, our banking system, our electrical grid, and so forth.
Hey! Some gay guy wants to have a wedding cake made for him! Let's focus on that!
