They should have run for their lives, and called for back-up.

You have missed the point entirely. Had the woman understood the English language she would have understood that they were asking her to drop the weapon and she would have complied, dropped it on the ground and stepped back. This was a failure of assimilation into the common culture on the old woman’s part and another example of why folks who claim they want to be here should make an effort to at least learn the language.

She failed to comply for whatever reason and instead proceeded to continue approaching them with a weapon in her hand with a bizarre grin on her face that could indicate dementia, a serious mental health issue, and/or the intent to attack and injure the officers. The officers had no choice but to defend themselves accordingly. She didn’t look none the worse for wear either in her booking photo and was probably only given a mild shock at the lowest setting.

During the depression, people commonly ate Dandelions. This lady is fantastic.

If I saw an old woman cutting dandelions, I would think she grew up during the Depression.

Or, she walked toward them with a friendly smile, holding the tool she had just been using. Since she was 87, she forgot her rudimentary English because of the stress, or she was hard of hearing and needed to be nearer to understand the officers ...

There's more than one way to look at a situation.

A lot of old people are hard of hearing.

There are many reasons immigrants should learn English. The fear of being brutalized by police simply for weeding your garden should not be one of them.

Not in the "land of the free", that is.

I ate wild dandelions and stinging nettle as a broke college student since it was a free way to get greens in my diet.
