Depends on what your definition of "socialist" programs is.

Social Security DOES use the term "Social" for a good reason.
It's not Socialism because if you don't pay into it, you don't get it. And how much you get depends upon how much you paid into it.

Except that's not the "democratic socialist" platform.

I’m a staff writer at the socialist magazine Jacobin and a member of DSA, and here’s the truth: In the long run, democratic socialists want to end capitalism. Many observers see groups like DSA pushing for policies like Medicare-for-all and decide that we must actually be something like New Deal liberals who are simply confused about the meaning of socialism. That’s not true. Our goal is not to rein in the excesses of capitalism for a few decades at a time — we want to end our society’s subservience to the market.

lol what? Thats funny. So according to you, the police and fire department and public schools is socialism and Social Security is not? So if everyone pays something into the Medicare-for-all system, its no longer socialism?

Except thats not Cortez, that's someone else running on a different platform.

But hey, if you dont think Medicare-for-all and a stronger public safety net is socialism, thats fine with me. Far more interesting than these labels is actual policy.

Since life expectancy is about 75-80 that is about 10-15 years on SS compared to 45-50 years of paying into the system. FICA payroll tax is over 15%.

If any of those programs are socialism I want my money back.
Its socialism just like public education, public roads, the military, SSDI and every other tax funded program. Medicare-for-all or tuition free public college is no different.

First time I recall that reference was "Caribou Barbie."
Anyone recall who was attacking whom that time?

What I don't understand is why when America rejected the left in favour of the right and Trump, that the Democrats would think it was a good idea to go even further left and start calling themselves socialists.

They may make some inroads in California and a few other liberal areas but by and large I don't think much of America beyond these areas is going to vote Democratic Socialist or embrace many of their policies.

I have followed US Politics and I just can't see voters in most of America supporting many of the policies offered by Ocasio and her ilk.

Little more complicated than that, Trump stood for:
- control on immigration and borders
- fair trade and tariffs
- reduced regulations on business
- more and better jobs
- real news rather than fake news
- America 1st
- Constitution based interpretation of the judiciary
- replacement of Obamacare with something better (still waiting on that one)

That's a winning platform but there is a large number that would support:
- no borders
- higher taxes
- wealth confiscation
- no law enforcement
- America last
- Constitution jettisoned
- race based benefits for votes

Socialist Barbie is very cute but is an ignoramus so that will likely lead her to the top of the Democrat party.

Really.

Would Americans reallly support mass immgration, I thought that's what they voted against.

Even issues such as gun controls are divisive, and most Americans are not Antifa or SJW's.

I generally find many Americans don't like or trust Government, hate taxes, don't want their gund conficated in any way and hate all this left wing postive discrimination and other such nonsense from the left such as LGBTQ Rights and feminism, whilst the idea of a peace economy sounds like yet more left wing nonsense.

I just can't see the Democrats selling this to the American heartlands. Indeed I wouldn't like to be knocking on doors and canvassing on such a platform in parts of the US.
