Bad policies have consequences

But but the left said min wage hikes would result in any negative consequences..

——-
New York Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez bemoaned on Monday the closing of a restaurant where she was previously employed, however, the restaurant cited an Ocasio-Cortez-endorsed policy for its closure.

The restaurant announced in July that it was closing, and cited the increased minimum wage as one of the attributing factors.

“The times have changed in our industry. The rents are very high and now the minimum wage is going up and we have a huge number of employees” one of The Coffee Shop’s co-founders, Charles Milite, told The New York Post.

Now they just need to find a way to force Americans into eating at restaurants and paying higher prices at gunpoint.

This thread would be credible if you can actually show how many businesses have failed due to the increase in the minimum wage.
Restaurants have one of the highest failure rates in business to begin with yet many prosper today even with a higher wage.

And you think big min wage hikes have no effect ??

These min wage hikes are anti business . Also anti employee ...when a business closes all the employees lose their jobs .

Local minimum wages are the business of that local government and the people that elect them.

NATIONAL minimum wages are stupid because they don't adjust for the vast cost differences across this country. Generally speaking the only people pushing for it are either uneducated with regards to economics or trying to create a fake issue and garner support in urban areas where it makes sense and to try to make the other party look like the bad guy.

Regarding diners and restaurants that employ minimum wage workers --

Why don't they just eliminate the tipping "rule" and raise prices? (Yes, I know that tipping is not mandatory, but it is expected unless it is clearly stated that it is a "no tipping" establishment. And if that is the case, I would still tip for above average service.)

I would also much rather pay an extra 10-20% and get good quality beverages and food then some of the cheap slop that so many restaurants and diners serve. (I will not return to any place that does not serve good, rich coffee.)

They have been scaling up for a few years now, so sure, not full effect, but they are working towards $15/hr by 2021 I believe, so your statement is only part true, and the gradual increase may be too much for some smaller places like this one appears to be.

The restaurant stated a major reason for their closing was the min wage .

It sounds like you aren’t familar with how the min wage increase in NYC is being implemented.

It’s being increased incrementally until it hits $15 hr

It’s similar in L.A and in other liberal cities that have jumped on this $15 hr min wage bandwagon

From the government site of NYC .

You make a good point though .. it hasn’t hit $15 yet .. when it hits $15 it’ll be a lot worse .
I guess we could just convert all those places that min wage workers used to work at into luxury condos though ... that will “help the poor “

Any company that cannot afford to pay their employees a living wage either needs to restructure and reassess their budget or not be in business at all.

You're right that restaurants close for many reasons all the time, and it's possible this business closing has nothing to do with wages.

You're wrong that this cannot be due to minimum wage laws. Wise business owners are pro-active not reactive. Perhaps the owner looked at the books, recalculated labor cost under the new minimum wage, and can see that he will be operating at a loss at the higher wages. If he does not think it likely the higher wages can be offset by higher revenues or reduced other expenses, why wait and lose money?
