So I've done a good bit of threads concerning reparations, some with polls. One of the responses I often get back is "There is nobody alive who have been slaves. So why give reparations today?" This argument against reparations isn't a very strong one. However after hearing it so much, it did have me wondering. If you were alive back in 1865, would you be in favor in giving the newly freed slaves 40 acres and mule?
I asked this question to a Youtube commentator a month ago. I wasn't totally surprised by the answer I received, but it had me shaking my head, confirming the mindset of people when it truly comes to this issue.
I have no idea what my mindset would have been had I been alive back in 1865. I'm sure that many people alive right now would be aghast at the idea that they might have had slaves or supported slavery, but in all reality, if you were alive in the South in 1865, there's a good chance you might have been. That was the prevailing mindset.
Anyway, if I were alive in 1865 with my current knowledge, then yes, I'd be in favor of giving the freed slaves some sort of reparations. If it was 40 acres and mules, then that's fine. I'd vote yes.

People were all for the concept of 40 acres and a mule with this one exception those that celebrated when President Abraham Lincoln was Assassinated.

Some speculate had Lincoln lived out his second term, would he have given the former slaves reparations? That's a good question because Lincoln himself wasn't a Radical Republican. Of course due to Sherman's field order, a lot of black people already were given land in Georgia and the Carolinas. Unfortunately that land was returned by Johnson. That SOB.
My idea of reparations would differ from most. College tuition, but trying to track down who gets what would be a nightmare. So, reluctantly, no. Back then? Yes. It might have changed our history and race relations forever.

I think reparations today are untenable but in 1865 they absolutely should have been pursued.
