Rep. Beto O'Rourke, the Democrat from El Paso, Texas, who is waging a credible challenge to Republican Sen. Ted Cruz for his seat this November, defended NFL players' right to protest in a video that has gone viral since it was posted on Tuesday.
O’Rourke was asked at a campaign town hall if he thought NFL players' kneeling during the national anthem was disrespectful. The person asking the question said he found it “incredibly frustrating” that people supported such protests.
I don't know why people struggle with this so much. It's pretty clear cut.
People are free to protest, others are free to either support them or oppose them.
Protesting WHILE AT WORK is not allowed in any normal job and will generally get you fired ESPECIALLY when you anger customers in the process.
That doesn't mean that players can't use their star-power to tweet, give interviews, attend marches or exercise any of their other rights.
As such, if I were an NFL owner facing this....here is what I would do.
1) I would offer to attend and host events aimed at raising awareness of abuse and inequality as well as to help uplift parts of the community that are underserved. If these are things important to my employees and the community then it would be a wise move and the right thing to do.
2) I'd bench and or trade\sh*tcan any player that messes with the product that is being put out there for the fans and hurting the company that pays their salary and the rest of the employees salaries.
Better enjoy it while it lasts, Beto, because the NFL will soon enough wise up and stop playing the anthem - they will take away the entire issue. TV networks are already moving in that direction by not showing the national anthem being played.
Yes, he does get it right! And not only on this issue - on many! I have four friends who are working hard on his campaign. It's an exciting time to be a Texan!
