Except nothing about the punishment or in the article seems to indicate this was the case.
Not to mention that the poster chastising me wrote: There has always been a few bad teachers. Nothing new.
Where was this made up scenario when she posted that?
Nothing in the article to suggest this wasn't the case.
I wasn't chastising you when I said there have always been a few bad teachers....I thought I was agreeing with you that it was ridiculous and this teacher was a bad one.
And even if the kid was being smart, the teacher acted incorrectly.
Whoa hang on there -- we don't know the context the kid used the word M'am.
Come on now - -the child could have been a smart ass, and the teacher lost her patience.
Not right at all -- but don't assume the child was just being a sweet child.
I tend to agree with you. This feel a lot like one of those "black man get's 20 years in prison for running stop sign" stories. The article reeks of selective detail omission.
And I don't see anything to indicate some gender-pronoun agenda that many are assuming.

The teacher over reacted -the punishment was too much but we don't know the whole story.
I get it. But for something to be done out of habit...is that habit. It's what they do.
I prefer genuine respect not something done out of habit or custom.
Give me a kid who can engage in a conversation while looking at you in the eye over a kid who says Yes M'am while staring at his feet.
I've no argument from you on this one.
But I'll also say that if a kid is at least using Ma'am or Sir to address their elders, then something right has taken place in their upbringing.
