The purpose is to level the playing field. We already meet that standard. We are pushing Mexico to meet that standard so that auto makers do not have a big wage incentive to shift production to Mexico. The average auto worker in this country makes $16/hour. The average Mexican worker makes $3/hour.
I believe that there is also a 75% Origin component ...... both the wage & Origin mean that Canada & Mexico have to produce the parts that go into the cars.

Currently - the "origin of content" is China/Asia using NAFTA loopholes to produce the parts.
Bottom line -- New Factories in Mexico, US and Canada for Auto parts (if Canada joins).
Canada has a problem that is called TPP ..... The USA no longer has that problem.

Actually, the left would call it losing especially if God Himself put His stamp of approval on it.

Smart move if he wants it to appeal to Mexican citizens. NAFTA is not something most are fond of in Mexico. Clinton pretty much raped their farmers.

Listening to the ignorance makes me think some people are really stupid though.

The whole anti-NAFTA talk was straight out of Obama's playbook.
"anti-NAFTA" is straight out of the UNION playbook/wishlist. Obama pandered by saying he would "unilaterally renegotiate" ..... in a way, The Obama did exactly that when he Unilaterally signed TPP giving China/Asian nations a bigger part of the Auto Industry. It's one of the reasons Trump got out of TPP.

Obama didn't "negotiate" anything in 8 years with either Canada or Mexico - it was all campaign ***-***

My understanding (have not found a link yet) is that Canada is rushing a Negotiating Team to Washington today. Canada Foreign Minister is saying that Canada must sign off on any deal between the USA & Mexico. She is wrong of course and Mexico just told her so

U.S-Mexico trade deal stands even if Canada left out - Mexican minister |Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The trade deal between the United States and Mexico will stand even if Canada does not come to an agreement with the Trump administration in the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Mexico’s foreign minister said on Monday.

“If for any reason the government of Canada and the United States do not reach a (NAFTA) agreement, we already know that there will still be a deal between Mexico and the United States,” Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray told a news conference in Washington.

Here it is - Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland flew to Germany last night for a big meeting in Berlin.
She cancelling the rest of her trip and is leaving Berlin right away to try and get to the USA.

The Latest: Canadian official heading to US for trade talks
By The Associated Press | Posted - Aug 27th, 2018 @ 12:53pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on a U.S. trade agreement with Mexico (all times local):

2:50 p.m.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland is cutting short her diplomatic trip to Europe to head to Washington for trade talks with the United States.

Freeland will fly to Washington on Tuesday after the Trump administration and Mexico said they have reached a preliminary accord to end the North American Free Trade Agreement and replace it.

In the meantime - Auto stocks in Canada are on the rise -- they are no longer afraid of US Tariffs on Canadian autos because of the Mexico/US agreement.

Why do you suppose that is?
Canada will join the agreement - they will have no choice.

It's a good deal for Manufacturing and for workers - it will be interesting to see how Freeland & Justin attempt to work their way out of the box they sealed around themselves.

President Trump wanted a Sunset Provision in any new agreement - he proposed every 5 years, Canada & Mexico objected.

The Art of the Deal =. Instead, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says periodic reviews will be required once a new agreement is signed.

Lighthizer says the agreement will be in force for 16 years. But every six years will bring an opportunity to resolve issues or modernize aspects of the agreement. The parties then would agree to continue the agreement for another 16 years. Mexico has agreed to the new timeline on Sunset reviews. Discussions would begin 6 years after the agreement & if any issues came up they could be changed OR discuss once a year up to the 16 year deadline.
