CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel chose a fraught moment for Chicago to make his stunning announcement Tuesday that he won’t be seeking a third term in office

Chicago has been held up by critics on the right as a poster child for urban dysfunction. President Donald Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and others say the city’s violent crime – it suffered more than 1,400 homicides in 2016 and 2017 – shows why voters shouldn’t trust Democratic politicians to lead.

Chicago is still on pace for more than 500 homicides for the fourth straight year.

Good riddance. 500 homicides for the 4th straight year speaks volumes about the failure of Demcrats to keep their constituents safe.

Sadly another Democrat will likely take his place and the annual 500+ homicides will continue for the foreseeable future.

He'll probably leave the city and move to a safer place like Miami.

He should have resigned already.

A competent leader would have prevented many killings.

or a gated community.

What is going on in some of those Chicago neighborhoods is terrible and what it is going to take to fix it and make it a safer place to live is against Liberal ideals.

The shootings are carried out by black on black so there is nothing racist there and that includes cops patrolling those areas more often and bringing back stop and frisk. There are gang members that are carrying guns, other weapons and drugs and there is no doubt that the cops know who these clowns are.
The police should be allowed to pull over and frisk these bozos and if an illegal gun is found or anything else that person is arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The word will get out on the street and the gangs will stop carrying weapons.

If a bad guy should do something stupid and as a result gets shot and killed by the police then so be it.

Most people don't care if some gang banger shoots another but often they are lousy shots and an innocent bystander takes a bullet through their bedroom wall.

Getting tough and stopping this senseless violence means keeping within the bounds of law but breaking from Liberal ideals and that is not popular.

Title of this thread is misleading. A majority of the article was about the controversy surrounding the police murdering of Laquan Daniels - it also mentioned homicide was down 20% this year over last year.

Also 500 murders in a city of over 2 million people, is a pretty good rate when it comes to crime statistics.

FYI OP back in the 1970s through the 1990s, Chicago averaged between 600 to over 900 homicides a year.

IMO it is a good thing he is not running, however, he should have announced this earlier so that more potential/interested candidates could have had more time to prepare for their own run.

Ahhhh Extremist. There are two sides to every coin. Chicago's core outward has continued to BOOM under this Mayor. Seen as very business friendly in luring corporate offices to Chicago. Downtown has super-talks and continually new residential high-rise to skyscraper living.

Many projects continuing to showcase the core and lakefront were completed. Despite failings in the notorious gang violence in neighborhoods no visitor really ever will see. Has many factors in why and why the spike in 2016. Despite most of these hoods look good and more normal then not.

Far Right extremist LUV business friendly politicians. Well this Mayor clearly did what could be done .... to get the Windy City to have -- A most vibrant core on the Nation AND in construction. Few cities did as great of planning to its core as Chicago.

Of course still a Democrat, liberal and machine politics-type politician. But still GREAT improvements did get done and a credit to this Mayor in a more stagnant state. Sadly, seems they did rather see the African-American population ..... continue to depart the city.

Again, few city cores can match Chicago's in recent years. Clearly, a poster child of -- A Tale of Two City's in one. But then more and more .... that is America. Chicago is also a example of the -- Quintessential American City in many ways. Best to not so great in issues.

After all.... Trump stepped back and never sent in the troops.

One thing Big business and Corrupt politicians have in common ..... they luv deals under the table and strings pulled. Just ask Donald Trump. That kept getting his tax assessment lowered for his Hotel interest in Chicago's Trump Tower. His tallest to date. You donate to the Alderman re-election campaign. But that luv might be over.

Politics Chicago-style..... was always colorful in every era. But did not stop it from evolving into a Great American city. Sadly .... being in the North today. Is not a asset.

Good riddance is right - another swamp creature drained. Chicago and the rest of American's ghettos wont' be fixed until the breakdown of the black family stops. Which is exactly what Pastor Williams was saying at Aretha's funeral. Only problem is, the people he was directing it to -- don't want to hear it.
