The word that came to my mind was asinine but then I realized how horribly things are unfolding for Trump and his administration so the words desperate and deflections seem just as suitable under the circumstances.

Obama campaigned in both 2008 and 2012 on the lie that he believed marriage was only between a man and a woman.
Of course literally everyone knew he was lying through his teeth. The right recognized this as just one more lie on an extremely long list, Obama being the pathological liar that he obviously was and still is.
The left knew he was lying also and were in fact counting on this being a lie. They cheered him when he publicly confirmed it by reversing his stance shortly after the start of his second term.
Compared to Trump, this will be a really short thread.
