While he certainly wanted to encourage fuel efficient cars, Obama hardly thought large cars would be extinct by now. And I fail to see what that has to do with a 20-year trend counter to that anyway. It's not like Obama (or any president) can do much to counter a 20-year trend.
And FWIW, I'm basically a cornucopian (or more precisely, a technocopian), so whatever Obama said was indifferent to me, personally.
