For their bottom line. That's all it's about for them. They don't really care about "free" information at all. They will sell out in a heartbeat to increase profits. In many ways they already have.

They sold out for the Chinese market. And to an extent they believe in censorship as well as we’re beginning to see them censor their platforms in the US

I was living in China during the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic (essentially their national holiday). It was astonishing how many American 'blue chip' companies put big ads on the television praising the People's Party and government. 'Congratulations!!!'
In 1949 these same companies were lamenting the fall of the Nationalist government, and the loss of any investments they had already made in the country. They pushed hard for a way to overthrow the communists in that cold war environment.
Today, they are quite happy to partner with Chinese investors and build slick new manufacturing facilities and employ Chinese engineers to design their products. They will meet Chinese safety, performance and pollution standards (which sometimes exceed USA requirements) without protest. Companies are not lifelong ideologues like real people generally would be, it's all about the money.
In that respect, Google is no different than any other American corporation.

And...companies like that are successful and they push up their bottom line and their stock values, which add to the 401K of millions of middle class American folks' retirement portfolios. So yeah, while China's human rights record is abismal, China's economy is such that many many Americans profit and benefit from its growth.
Changed my search engine to duckduck.go. Many others doing the same.
