Puerto Rico had a lot of problems with it's infrastructure before the hurricane hit which has made it even more difficult to put it back together.
PR is an island and the people had no where to go but to huddle in their homes and many of them were not built to hurricane standards that we require in the states.
If the people of South Carolina were not able to move inland before Florence hits I'm sure we would be seeing many deaths due to it.
Florence will be a big test for Trump and his team but I'm sure his detractors will find fault in something.
Trump could have a big machine that pushes the storm back out to sea and they would still complain.
Relying on any govt for assistance is lethal to your health
If I recall, President Trump even noted the difficulty in helping out PR, stating that it is surrounded by 'big water'.
Big water. Ocean water.
The difference in response to hurricanes in the states where he's worried about his political capital and Puerto Rico, who basically has no representation, is enormous. And the governor of PR is complicit. It's been obvious from the beginning that the death toll was greatly underreported.

I already know what it is, they were making the same complaint comparing the Texas response to the PR response. This is not the sole responsibility of the federal government or even all levels of government. You are going to have state, local governments, private companies and numerous non profits that are far more prepared to deal with this than what happened in PR. On top of that they will not have to be dealing with underlying infrastructure issues that should of been addressed before the storm. Whatever the response is it will be far better than what happened in PR and that will be the talking point.
Notice how very few Trumpers have responded in this thread, because there's simply no defending the dummy in chief.
If there's any justice in the world, Puerto Rico will be remembered as an atrocity.
It truly struck me when the number of dead came out. It was another 9-11, and it was self-inflicted by the incompetent response of Trump.
The 2975 deaths makes it, as far as I can tell, the 2nd deadliest hurricane with regards to US citizens, behind only the Galveston Hurricane of 1900.
Then Trump moves 10 million dollars from FEMA to ICE at the start of hurricane season. The man isn't fit to be president.
Quote:
Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tyler Q. Houlton confirmed on Tuesday that money was transferred from FEMA to ICE. However, he denied accusations that the money was diverted from disaster relief funds.
"Under no circumstances was any disaster relief funding transferred from FEMA to immigration enforcement efforts," Houlton said in a Twitter statement.
