Talk to Russian veterans of Afghanistan and it's hard not to think that they're rooting for the U.S. to lose. For these proud men, seeing NATO succeed at a job they botched would deepen the humiliation of defeat. Easier to affirm that if the Soviets couldn't win there, no one can. "We did not succeed and you will not either," says Gen. Victor Yermakov, who commanded Soviet forces in Afghanistan from 1982 to 1983.

Nato will not succeed in that country because no one wants them there and their puppet government will be gone soon.

This is act was not commited by the Taliban or any Afghan citizen. Mullah Omar agreed to handover Bin-Laden to a third world country but the U.S. refused, to this day the U.S. have yet to capture Bin-Laden.

You're half right. There does need to be a "regime change".

The Taliban willingly harbored and protected Al Queda and Bin Laden. What "third world country" was it? Yemen? Somalia? Libya? I don't support Bush for chit but I'll prop him up there.

The Taliban didn't know Bin-Laden and AQ were planning these attacks because Bin-Laden made an agreenment with Mullah Omar that he wouldn't harm any western country. Mullah Omar wanted to handover Bin-Laden even before 9/11 but no one listened to him.

The 3rd world country was Saudi Arabia and the U.S. refused.

And even before that, Sudan offered him to the Saudis, but they didn't want him either-"whadyya mean, we don't need no stinking martyr, let'im go attack Israel or America or somewhere else." We need to cut our ties to the Saudis, stop selling them arms (they are the #1 buyer of US weaponry--any news on that?) and ally with Iran, who has the real clout and power to cease and desist terrorism and violence unlike our fake friends the Saudis, who are lazy, corrupt and cowardly.

The soviets basically divided the country into zones and then killed everything that moved in the zones they considered "bad", which ended up being most of the country. The deaths and injuries they caused were in the millions of people. Not exactly the way to win the hearts and minds.

NATO and the USA is taking a completely different approach to building good relationships and infrastructure.

By chance I was watching a Russian war film last night called 9 Rota(The 9th Company). The movie is based somewhat on one of the last battles in their war in 1988. The movie doesn't try to hide the soviets heavy handedness with civilians nor examines why they lost so painfully.
