Hispanics and blacks have been going at it for ages. Only thing those two groups have in common is voting for democrats to legislate us out of poverty.
I’m not surprised at all that a Spanish speaker in a Hispanic populated area would racially and linguistically discriminate against one of the few blacks in the area.
I heard this stuff happens in places like Miami all the time.
It happens in L.A. too. Some Hispanics actually start fires and throw crap in windows to get people out of their neighborhoods. Like one poster said, they're colonizing.
So what's stopping anyone who wants to sell products to all those little towns from learning Spanish?
Just because English is our common language does not mean it will always be the only language spoken here.
In fact, English has never been our only spoken language. As long as there are still native Americans who can only speak their tribal tongues, English never will be our sole spoken language.
Just as it is in the rest of the world, if enough of any group move here, we will all become bi-lingual. And we cannot close all the others out forever.
The first colonizers were only the first in any new unoccupied territory. They are never the last or only. There are always those who arrive later.
The Hispanics in those small towns may come to learn Korean as their second language if that's the language they need to learn to speak.
But since all our laws are written in English, and so much of our culture is in English, everyone will learn some English in time. So some folks are naturally going to learn more than two languages.
Every Jew who ever migrated came to speak at least three- Yiddish, their home country's language, and English. Some were only literate in a fourth- Hebrew. In Europe, knowing 5 languages is common.
You can live life resenting your neighbors, or you can communicate with them. Communication is always a 2-way street. Hating the necessity of communication doesn't change anything.
Come on now, in America, you'd have to learn five languages to communicate. That's why English is the language of communication. Not only in America but it's the universal choice in communication. English as a Universal Language

Many countries have more than one official language - Canada and Switzerland come readily to mind - and they function just fine. In fact, learning more languages as a child only enhances your opportunities later in life.
I think it's time for the USA to consider requiring both Spanish and English proficiency in schools as a requisite for graduation. Not only is there a huge spanish speaking population in the USA, many of the countries in the hemisphere speak only spanish. Imagine what an advantage it would be to Americans to be able to travel to Mexico, central and southern America and be able to communicate.
Most Spanish speakers are bi-lingual so why would we have to learn Spanish to communicate with them? Are you admitting that Spanish speakers refuse to assimilate linguistically into our country? Yeah, I already knew that. Such arrogance! No one should have to learn a foreign language to be a tourist in any country. That's ludicrous! A few words to get by is one thing but learning the entire language is quite another.

Neither Canada nor Switzerland, however, requires everyone to learn all their official languages, so your proposal fails even in your examples.

We all know republicans have welcomed this Cuban invasion with open arms because they need their republican votes. Republicans not only gave them a green card after a year of arriving here but also gave them food, cash money and other benefits for the first year. It's not only that but the Democrats are pandering to the ethnocentric type of Hispanic-American with an amnesty for their illegal amigos. How is that any different than the Republicans pandering to Cuban-Americans for their votes?
