I'm a liberal.

And there's nothing you can do about it.

We've never had good terminology to distinguish left from right. What I think is that 'social democrat' and 'socialist' could be accurate and useful terms to use.

'Social Democrat' is what they have in Scandinavia--large safety net, high taxes, and everyone is happy. The US Democratic party is largely 'social democrat.'

'Socialist' is government ownership/operation of the means of production. This is what they have in Cuba and Venezuela. The main socialist party in the US seems to have become the Democratic Socialists of America. It unfortunately has not often been properly implemented. 'Socialist' has become virtually a pejorative, but should not be so. There are good people like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez working on that problem.

In Canada "liberal" and "conservative" literally mean nothing. You might as well just say "corrupt" and "regressive".

Liberal comes from the same root word as liberty. Leftists are about controlling other people's lives. They are not in any way committed to the traditional American concept of "liberty," as in "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Any leftist who tries to tell you that they are either are completely ignorant of what they speak, or more likely, they are lying straight through their teeth, which they do quite often.
I've been saying this for a while now. The conflating of the two terms has been driving me nuts. Classic liberalism is a great noble thing in my opinion. Far left progressives not so much.

Really 'progressive' is not the most accurate/descriptive term either. Progressivism grew out of the late 19th/early 20th century. A lot of it was misguided. Progressives were a main force behind both eugenics and alcohol prohibition.

The root of course is "progress," and progressives believed in reaching towards a utopia of science/technology/planning. Today's left would disavow a lot of what progressives thought. I think the term was resurrected around the 1990s, when it was decided that "liberal" had taken on a negative tone.

Yeah, you're probably right. It's all sorta fluid anymore. Terms do tend to sorta shift and morph over time. Textbook feminism is a good idea. Now that term has a different meaning, it would appear.

Actually, yours is a pretty dumb definition also, although it's clear you either do not or cannot recognize that reality.

Here's your real, honest-to-goodness definition of a "conservative," from which the definition of "liberal" can be directly derived:

"Conservative, n: A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal who wishes to replace them with others."

--Ambrose Bierce

I think we can all agree that it simply cannot be said, nor ever has been said, any better by anyone, anywhere.

LOL Don't tell me which words to use.

A lot of different words have that same "root." The left and political liberals are one in the same.

You are correct, one has to first realize they are stupid before they can take the steps on fixing it.
