The media is calling Miss Ford Dr. Ford because she has a PhD. I once knew a lawyer who taught civics at a community college and made the students call him “doctor.” I also read a recent article on “Doctor Nurses.” Many college professors want people to call them “doctor.” The superintendent of my high school had a phd in education and some people called him “doctor.” Many of these titles came along after physicians grained high status in society as doctors. So, should that term be reserved for physicians, or can anyone be a doctor?

Anyone who has earned a doctorate degree can certainly call themselves Dr. if they wish.

...anyone who earns a PhD, which is difficult to do, in many fields more difficult than becoming a medical doctor. These are people who, at least in theory, have advanced human understanding of something significant. Why wouldn't you want to respect and encourage that?

Your poll is flawed. The first choice needs to be changed to "Anyone who has a PhD. or other doctoral degree, regardless of subject, can be called a doctor".

The term "doctor" relates to a level of education and is not specific to a particular field. The idea that only Doctors of Medicine should be called "doctor" would require us to come up with another name for people who have attained that level of expert status in other fields.

I noticed that The Weather Channel has the people out in the field standing in the hurricane use the first name. But the person standing safely in the air conditioned studio is very often called Dr. Smith. Frankly, I think it's a little phony.

These attacks on Christine Ford are getting silly and ridiculous.
Trump loves the uneducated, and they love him, and this flawed poll shows it.
