Yeah, the F-35B (the type that crashed in SC) was first introduced on July 31, 2015. The entire F-35 program has been plagued with problems from the start.
Maybe due to the price of a plane and the media showing crashes through the development of a program that test pilots no longer push an aircraft to failure like during the Chuck Yeager The Right Stuff era. So a "first crash" in the fleet makes the news more than just another training accident.

The engineering that went into designing the F-35 is truly amazing and they're still trying to re-engineer the thing even after they have already started producing them. I feel the big issue with the F-35, was trying to make it into the "Swiss Army knife of jet fighters", they tried to cram so much into the plane and have it do so many crazy/amazing things, it just made it hard to pull it all off.
