Him falling in love with Kim Yong-Un has softened his heart, but I am afraid the hate will re-surface as soon as he realized Kim does not love him back.
Since China wouldn't join the TPP agreement, the US is pursuing bilateral deals like USMCA with other countries that contain a clause prohibiting the other party from entering into a new trade agreement with China at the discretion of the US Department of Commerce.
Japan is essentially a puppet government of the U.S., especially after their economy was crashed after the 1980's and became dependent of the US economy. Japan's dominant political party had been covertly funded by the US for many decades. Much of Japan's exports to the US passes through China (as well as Mexico). China is trying to avoid the same policies as Japan.
Given his want of highly regulated (opposite of free) trade, why doesn't Don hate Japan?
For many decades, the trade deficit with Japan has been in the 10's of billions per year. Taken against inflations...and compounded to the present day, this has got to be in the TRILLIONS. Sure, it goes up then goes down then goes up.
Japan has gotten smart and now has a lot of their stuff made a labeled in S. Korea (another country we have a large deficit with) as well as MANY other Asian countries....
It makes sense to go after ALL the big ones, right? Japan is #4.....
He wants the opposite of free trade? Because he wants China to play fair and the US to have better deals elsewhere?
I bet you're a global warming person too. But because you hate Trump you'll root for China even though they produce more pollution than most of the rest of the world. Hypocrite.

They'll root for Trump to fail at any and everything he does even if that means it'll hurt our country and it's citizens, and helps are our enemies...
Heck, they were rooting and hoping Trump failed during the North Korea talks. Nothing but negatively before the talks even began.
Today: Let's pick a random country and make up a reason to hate Trump for it.
Democrat & leftists have been in a blind rage since 2016.
one thing i will disagree with you on is, they have been in a blind rage since they lost congress in 2010, trump is just the latest target after beating their latest anointed one.
to the OP, trump doesnt hate china, despite yours and the rest of the left wing haters feelings, he hates the trade deals that were put in place just after world war two that were supposed to be temporary in nature to allow those countries to rebuild their own economies without having to just give them a ton of american money in the form on loans that they would have to pay back.
as for japan though, their markets have been very tightly controlled for centuries, you can thank spain for that in large part by the way.
but give trump time, he will get around to trade deals with japan and other countries in time.
There's less rhetoric about Japan because they are our ally. Pretty simple.
However Trump has gone after Japan, and South Korea, to reform their trade practices. Some commentators criticized Trump for going after Japanese mercantilism, claiming it was an 80s throwback.
He must be referring to the pre-Meiji southern ports where Spanish and Portuguese trade was allowed.
I think that's too far in the past to have much bearing on the future, especially since the Edo period ended decisively with the Meiji restoration.
The mercantilist strategy was first pioneered by Colbert, so I blame the French!
