As the original poster all I can say is, "I got exactly the responses I expected". Even my own.

Our great nation is falling apart at the seams. Listen to yourselves. Listen to others. We cannot remain a great and viable nation if we stand divided.

Stop. Take a breath. Calm down. Do not let those who wish to see us fail succeed.

Well, of course there IS a way to permanently "opt out" of the alert system.
Just turn your phone OFF. Turn it on when you actually need to use it, then turn it off again.
OR
Just get rid of your phone. After all, you don't really NEED it, do you? Will you die before dark if you don't have it? Besides, you do know that "they" can track you with your cell phone, don't you? That's right, "THEY" know where your phone is right now, within a few feet!
You better get rid of that thing.

It just seems un-American to force these alerts on our personal phones.

Think of it as the modern-day version of Paul Revere's ride.

As much as I joke about it I see this as a good thing as long as it's used as intended. Think about it. If the only time it is going to be used is during a national emergency then how often will that happen? The problem may be who defines what is considered a national emergency.

We will all find out at some point.

And a nuclear bomb is the modern-day version of a stick of dynamite.

I agree. It would have been great during 911.

However, who is going to say 'no' to Trump when he wants to use this new toy to say "Fake News" to a NYT article?
