As the original poster all I can say is, "I got exactly the responses I expected". Even my own.

Well, of course there IS a way to permanently "opt out" of the alert system.
Just turn your phone OFF. Turn it on when you actually need to use it, then turn it off again.
OR
Just get rid of your phone. After all, you don't really NEED it, do you? Will you die before dark if you don't have it? Besides, you do know that "they" can track you with your cell phone, don't you? That's right, "THEY" know where your phone is right now, within a few feet!

As much as I joke about it I see this as a good thing as long as it's used as intended. Think about it. If the only time it is going to be used is during a national emergency then how often will that happen? The problem may be who defines what is considered a national emergency.
