When a song gets a re-mix, it effectively becomes a perpetual copyright (Constitution forbids it). Also, trying to the find the original version can be hard because it might not longer exist in any medium (record, cassette, CD, etc.) when it becomes public domain. Copyright maximalists are a group I despise.
Yes, I am saying it's not a good thing. It's due in part to media corporations like Disney that we have not had a large work of works enter the American public domain since 1/1/1999.
