The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. If your looking for the start of the decline, this change in our laws, written by two Jewish men, is as good a place to look as any.
Why does the religion of the authors matter to you?
OP views American in decline because we have a smaller share of the wealth, but fails to recognize that we are just getting a smaller percentage of a MUCH BIGGER pie. Our net wealth has grown, not declined. People who do not understand how the world works, want to keep it ALL for themselves (ourselves). But the reality is that one of the reasons we have continued to prosper is because other economies (our customers) have grown and prospered. Without them, we would be much worse off.
We have declined in the past couple years, but I do believe that America is strong enough, and resilliant enough to overcome Trumpism. As long as we can get him out in 8 years, preferrably after 4 years, we'll climb back up to where we were prior to 2017. If he stays in office past 8 years, or if someone who holds his views is next, it could lead us to the same outcome as EVERY OTHER leader who has tried to bully the world for personal gain.
America isn't declining, the rest of the world is simply growing and trading more, and this was always inevitable.
At the end of WW2 most of the world was in a real bad state, most of Europe was bombed out and broke, as was Japan, whilst communism stifled growth in Eastern Europe, Russia, China etc.
America was streets ahead of everyone else at the time, it's economy was booming, it's cities were largely undamaged and increasingly wealthy, it's industry dominated and it had a massive advantage over other countries and economies.
It's cheap prodution that have seen industry move, it might actually move back when technology makes it just as cheap to manufacture anywhere and industry is even less labour intensive, indeed the US has the advantage of lots of energy sources and can tap in to lots of renewables, so the future is bright for the US as far as I can see.
The US has also dominated the tech sector over the last decade, and US companies dominate the internet, so the US may well be making more high quality goods in the future however the world may also be making more oods as a whole, hence the drop in percentage global output.
I agree with you on this one. To set the starting point at a time when most of Europe and key places of Asia were destroyed by WWI and/or Communism is not a fair natural way to make a comparison.
It was inevitable that other nations would advance and they have and I believe this is good for everyone.
Even considering other nations have been advancing at a higher clip, the USA has 41% of the world's wealth with only about 4% of the world population.
I've spent the last few days in Budapest and my conclusion is we (USA) need to focus less on wealth and more on making things beautiful.
Adapting to American Decline
By Christopher A. Preble
There is no question that America’s share of global wealth is shrinking. By some estimates, the United States accounted for roughly 50 percent of global output at the end of World War II. By 1985, its share stood at 22.5 percent. It has fallen to 15.1 percent today, and the International Monetary Fund projects that it will slip to 13.7 percent by 2023.
The proliferation of various technologies — from crude explosives to advanced robotics — has made it easier for even relatively small and weak countries and nonstate actors to challenge the big and powerful United States... The problem is, the United States already spends more on its military than the next seven or eight nations combined.
(And the New York Times? Your argument would have had better legs had it come from the National Enquirer, for God's sake......)
