It also seems like a bit of effort for a "last minute" costume. When I was a kid, "last minute" meant your mom cut eyeholes in an old sheet and told you to say "Boo!"
Exactly. Last minute is dressing you in black and drawing cat whiskers on your face with black eyeliner, at most. This seems more calculated.
I don't think it matters if a Treblinka survivor or WWII vet comes forward and says, "This doesn't offend me! I don't care!" It's still insensitive and tone deaf. How removed do you have to be from what was mass murder to think the individual who set it in motion is comparable to a movie villain?
Costumes, symbols, nor speech can hurt me so I really don't care what people wear.

Bad taste? .....Maybe, depends on the context.
But shocking??
Nope.
Say all the people who have a freaking melt-down and feel attacked if someone tells them "Happy Holidays". Unbelievable.
And to compare WW2 and the Third Reich to The American Revolution and The British is beyond ignorant. One country was trying to uphold their colonialistic ways (bad), the other was proactively trying to exterminate vast segments of human existence based on race, religion and others. Do you really have such a lacking moral compass that you don't see a distinction?
Typical liberal complaints - if they don't like it, it should be banned.
I didn't see anyone saying that. The teacher should know better. Banning inappropriate costumes would be insane. People having common sense and decency isn't insane...though apparently too much to ask.
Oooooh, the big mean costume might hurt me! Get a freakin LIFE people. Che Guevera was a mass murderer, yet people wear shirts with his picture, put up his posters, carry flags with his image. Yet that is OK. Hmmmmm.

But that is exactly the point. Perhaps you're too short-sighted to understand that. Most of us would not wear something like that, but if one wants to that is his right.

First the jab at liberals, and then the "perhaps you're too short-sighted." It's not criminal to debate something without being condescending, ya know.
I understand that that's the kid's right. I didn't think that was the debate. Just because you can doesn't mean you should, etc.
When your friend tells you "I think my wife's cheating on me," do you say "Well, that is her right" and that's the end of the conversation?
No one should ever dress up like Hitler. He was real and he orchestrated the systematic rape, torture, enslavement, and genocide of tens of millions of innocent people. The fact that this woman doesn't see this means she's dumb as a stump and should not have procreated.
