About 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was a big reason why Taft lost. Roosevelt siphoned a lot of votes from Taft and was one of the last most effective third party campaigns. I do agree that the Democrats need a governor to turn to but who? Cuomo is too left. Brown, same story. Hickenlooper probably would be casted off in a similar situation. That leaves not a whole lot of options for Democratic governors. The only Vice Presidents would be Gore and Biden. Gore is a little too left and Biden might work.
Go ahead with Joe Biden. That ought to be funny when they bring up the ridiculous things Trump says, and the memes will be "Biden says hold my beer." Come to think of it, that might be nice actually to not have to worry about the way someone talks and just focus on issues.
First of all, the only way incumbent Presidents get bounced by challengers, the challenger is almost always an ex-governor.
1992 - ex-governor of AR beats incumbent.
1980 - ex-governor of CA beats incumbent.
1976 - ex-governor of GA beats incumbent.
1932 - ex-governor of NY beats incumbent.
1912 - ex-governor of NJ beats incumbent.
You have to go back more than 100 years to break that pattern. Julian Castro fails that test.
When an incumbent has lost to someone that wasn't a governor at some point, that challenger had been Veep, former US military flag officer and/or US Senator. Julian Castro fails that test.
The Democrats need to tap an ex-governor or Veep, who has name recognition and no easily exploitable baggage. Julian Castro fails that test.
He will not challenge Trump at anything, and if he dos, he will lose.
Agreed. And then there's the primary disqualifier for Castro: he's an irredeemable lightweight. He'll be handily punked by almost any other Democrat in the running. If he does throw his hat in the ring, he's likely to be the first one to have it handed back to him, with his head in it.
It would be difficult to envision a presidential candidate with less to offer than Julian Castro, aside from his need for a taxpayer-funded paycheck. And that ain't much to run on.
