The U.S. is back on top as the most competitive country in the world, regaining the No. 1 spot for the first time since 2008 in an index produced by the World Economic Forum, which said the country could still do better on social issues.
America climbed one place in the rankings of 140 countries, with the top five rounded out by Singapore, Germany, Switzerland and Japan. All five countries’ scores rose from 2017, with the U.S. notching the second-biggest gain after Japan’s.
I wonder what could have happened that caused this... anyone have any clues what could have happened?

Low wages and cheap natural gas for starters. Between 2010 and 2016 over 300,000 offshore jobs returned to the U.S. where the price of natural gas has fallen 25%. In China the cost of gas has gone up 138%.
Thank you President Obama for laying the foundation for our economic recovery from the 2008 bank crisis!
Yup.
Obama did the work.
Trump take credit - like he does for everything he has little or nothing to do with.
On the other hand, Trump IS likely to trash the recovery - but of course he'll claim it's not his fault.
Obama enforced more business regulations than any President in history.
Trump removed more business regulations than any President in history, and he did it as soon as he took office.
Also bare in mind-

The National Assn. of Manufacturers reported that the results of its quarterly NAM Manufacturers’ Outlook survey show optimism increased to 93.3% during Q1 2017, a record high in the survey’s nearly 20-year history. The rise corresponds with an increase manufacturing activity, NAM noted, and is based on widely shared confidence that the administration of President Donald Trump will provide relief from government regulations, tax reform, and significant investments in U.S. infrastructure.
NAM is the largest manufacturing association in the United States, and represents more than 14,000 small, midsized, and large manufacturers in every industrial sector, in every state. For the past 20 years, NAM has surveyed its members each quarter to gain insight into their economic outlook, hiring, and investment decisions and business concerns.
In the latest survey, the 93.3% represents manufacturers who indicated they are “somewhat positive” or “very positive” about their own company’s outlook, up from 56.6% at Q1 2016 and 77.8% in Q4 2016. As a result, the NAM Manufacturers’ Outlook Index rose to 63.7% (also a new high) from 53.3% in December (Q4 2016), and marking the second straight quarter where the outlook exceeded its historic average (i.e., 50%.)
Great news. I don't care who takes credit. I would never secretly wish my country fail because of the political party currently in power.
I will tell you this... if the doom and gloom promised after the 2016 election does not start happening prior to 2020, DJT may win no matter who runs against him. Most Americans care more about their personal well being rather than a party. Unlike many people who are on political forums.
... so, Bush got blamed for 8-years for a failed economy (and anything else negative), while Obama gets credit for 'building a great foundation,' (without any real progress). Now, Obama gets the credit for everything positive, while Trump gets bashed incessantly for the next 8-years, for not being more 'Obama-like.'
It sounds like some have been 'drinking the kool aid' again.
