Putin wanted Trump to win because he saw Trump being more disruptive to the Western Alliance, and being more disruptive in general. That is, he wanted Trump to win because he knew Trump would screw things up for the US. This would leave openings for Russia to gain influence.
And now, Putin has gotten exactly what he wanted. Putin knows this, and now he is bragging about it.

In terms of absolute size, the US has had the world's largest economy, non-stop, since somewhere in the late 1800's. So that can't be what you're talking about.
The only other #1 in the US economy you could have been referring to was this. Which is what I was referring to.
