The linked video provides a thorough and scholarly analysis of the origins of the Second Amendment. However, it's not dry and dusty but fascinating and entertaining. I suggest that members watch and digest the entire video before offering comments.

Well, I actually watched the whole thing and found it to be as you say. One only needs to look at what types of firearms have been most widely owned and used by the citizenry through our history to see that service type weapons are the most prevalent arms in the hands of the people. After the Revolution militia and regular soldiers alike took home their Charleville and Brown Bess military muskets en masse. After the Civil War Springfield rife/muskets and Enfields did the same. Even up to WW2 and Korea it was common practice for warfighters to take their service rifles home when discharged.

When full auto became the service standard then the unconstitutional 1938 firearms act stopped this practice. The now gutted DCM used to distribute surplus service rifles like the M1 Garand, M1carbine and 03 Springfield in profusion following the intent of its creation to "well regulate" the militia.

The DCM has languished long enough. BRING IT BACK and recognize it. Fund it and supply it. Surplus M14s (good luck there) and M 16's/M4s can be modified for civilian use as semi auto only. Thanks to the gun control nuts who got government support these rifles are chopped in half and scrapped. What was done to the M14 was criminal. The 1911 suffered much the same fate.

These weapons should have been offered to the qualified non criminal US citizenry. Seems we have a nervous government. The DCM screens buyers and offers (used to be way better) training as well. It was a great source for militia capable arms standard with the military. A recent look I took at the DCMs web site found me very dismayed.
