Some folks may have a point about supply and demand, however, with the absurd profits the oil companies are making, why not put a stop to this?
I just think that a few folks (a lot of them involved with the war or the Bush adminstration, even if it is just huge, huge donations) are getting ridicoulously rich, while driving this country into a recession.
Again, if supply and demand, thanks to China's westernization over the last 8 years (wonder why, hhm, conservatives love China, but hate Cuba), is most of the answer, well, we are screwed. But as long as Exxon, BP and Chevron are making historical profits, well, get rid of the tax breaks and subsidies and/or put in anti gouging laws. Something NEEDS to be done!

Why the record profits? Record demand for oil... with China and India having billion person populations and attempting to become first world nations, it's no mystery as to why the demand for natural resources has risen.

Profits aren't what's driving gas prices higher... the amount of profit per gallon for Exxon hasn't changed. What has changed is the price of crude, specifically purchased in dollars. Stop purchasing crude from OPEC nations and you'll see a change in the price of crude.

There is no price-gouging. However, these companies have no right to Federal monies or tax breaks.

Would you rather Communist China and other countries have the largest (and therefore control) oil companies in the world?

It's happening.

Take away their tax breaks (based on the huge risk involved in what they do, as far as I understand them) and watch what happens to the supply.... and the demand... and the price... and unemployment....

When we have created a world where everything we touch depends on oil.

Until we decide to get off our collective butts and change that, I say give 'em all the tax breaks they want and hope they keep finding the stuff.

I'm all for taking their tax breaks away, but you cant take the tax breaks away from the domestic companies, and then give them to foreign companies, especially with a weak dollar.. That shows that Congress has no understanding of economics..

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I bought shares of Exxon/Mobil two years ago, and have made a substantial increase in my portfolio ... even during the time when the market was slumping. Oil companies are traded on the market just like any other large business ... so it's not just the executives who are reaping all the profits. The people who are making money from oil companies are the average Joes and Josephines who were wise enough to invest in them.

I started another thread on this, so I suggest you complainers read it & take my advice. There are things you can do as consumers to reduce your gas consumption & save money.
