Are you serious and if yes, how would that work?

Same way it works for the federal government.

Conservatives like me have argued for this for years. We conservatives do not wish to force our values on Massachusetts or California. As far as I am concerned they can have all the socialism, gay marriage and legal drugs they want up there. It is their place to make their laws. The problem is that liberals do insist on us living the way they say we should. They would never acknowledge our right to have our own laws. After all they see us as NAZIs, they do not believe we are smart enough to make our own laws. They believe the poor, minorities and homosexuals of red state America need northern and western liberals to liberate them from the likes of us conservatives. They intend to use the federal government as a club to beat us into submission. This is why our nations problems are likely destined to be settled by civil war. If we only followed our founding fathers plans our politically and ethnically diverse naton could live happily and peacefully together in one union. It looks as if some of us are not capable of following the founders plans.

great post!

Federalism would inevitably lead to secession, which would be for the best imo.

Better than the alternative, which will be outright civil war if things don't change in a drastic way.

Trump has been doing this already though. Trying to apply the rules passed by Congress to the states has been frustrating since they just ignore them (sanctuary cities) so he has used the regulatory authority of the Executive Branch to limit the power of rogue states to economically control everyone else through the high taxation that supports their defiance of federal laws and enables them to embark on unAmerican communist/socialist schemes that disadvantage the American citizens living in their states and also harm other Americans not living in their state.

How is this not federalism in action?

If the states do as they please, then they must suffer the consequences, and shouldn't be able to impose any externalities on neighboring states. Unfortunately they are getting away with it.

So they need some federal restraints on their abuse of power...For instance..CA needs the whip, as it is WAY off the reservation.

Don't forget, an amendment "Congress shall pass no legislation to which they are not subject".

There actually have been a few on the left calling for consideration of this. If ever there were an opportune moment for something like this, it would be now.

Obama/Holder actually ran with the idea re marijuana legalization. Holder signed a deal with the governors of WA and CO to ignore federal law after voters approved mj legalization. Trump has left the deal in place. As someone moderate/left, I'd say it's worth considering.

The problem is that very conservative states would be free to go wild. Eliminate environmental protections, return to sodomy laws, mandate assault weapons for all, etc.

They couldn't eliminate environmental protections entirely since the effects would be felt by neighboring states, especially in waterways.

Sodomy laws, have at it. I'm ok with whatever gun legislation that any state wants to put into place. The point being, is we have free movement between states, you can live in a state that fits your beliefs, ethics and morality better. Federalism is not perfect but its better than this tug of war between two factions where each side wants to force itself and its beliefs on the opposition.

Small detail of adverse selection.

For example

Liberal state with universal health insurance would be less popular as people would live in GOP state... until they got sick.
