How can freedom count when voting is the antithesis of freedom?

In heavily R or D areas there is no point running because you'll just get clobbered anyway by straight ticket voters.

So, winning the primary is all it takes and in some parts of the country those jobs are somewhat *promised* and if you try to buck that then the party will have words with you.

Many reasons. First you never know when the shoo-in candidate is going to be caught with a dead girl or live boy (I guess that rule should be changed now), or just keel over dead. Second, when you run you're building name-id for the future. Third, if you can play spoiler, you can translate that into leverage. If you're single, running for office is a great way to meet women. Many reasons.
