Q: Liberals, why do we need to turn American into a big welfare state?

A: To create more and more people dependent on Government for their sustenance, and desperate to vote for Democrats who will continue paying them.

FKD, your question is very typical of the right wing.

If you keep hearing "it is all about the poor people" maybe you need to widen your sources and stop listening to who is filling your head with that nonsense.

the US has the worst social safety net of any modern and free economy on the planet. It really is that simple. If you think ours is 'good" you just have not spent the time to learn about others. Ours sucks and ours has been carefully crafted to give large employers all the advantages and to put massive pressure on the average worker to accept absolutely lousy terms and wages.

I challenge you FKD, to come up with just one major modern and free economy that has a worst set of social safety nets. I can make this challenge secure in the knowledge you will FAIL. because our sucks, despite what you "feel".

and the rest of your post is just more right wing fear mongering ref the borders ... it is patently false.

well you just showed us that YOU don't understand how universal healthcare is funded. But the only people who would get a "free ride" on universal care are ALREADY GETTING A FREE RIDE ON MEDICAID

Thus what on earth are you talking about scarabuck?

public systems are funded through payroll taxes on the employee and the employer. They are capped, they are reasonable and you pay through out your working life. nobody rides free, everyone gets coverage and those with good jobs and or the means mostly choose to buy private plans that sit on top while the public one does the heavy lifting.

So again liberals are not about "free" they are about smart. Repubs seem to love paying twice as much and still having little true security, I figure they all just watch too much TV and don't do any real research or put real thought into it.

Just a few hours of research and you scarabuck will be posting about "how is it the US has so much money and such messed up healthcare insurance"....

Is it the goal, or is it a means to an end? - I've never had a sense that welfare was about making everyone wealthy, but rather about stopping some getting too poor.

No, we don't. Please stop the straw man arguments. It's intellectually dishonest.

So, punish only those who work and earn enough income to support themselves and their families with even higher taxes, and force them to pay for everyone else? NO, THANKS.

Implement a VAT tax. That way everyone truly does pay. About a 25% flat VAT tax rate should cover it.

implement the fair tax... a flat 23% sales (consumption) tax, and replace the income tax with it

but liberals will never go for it...it takes their boogieman (control) away

You guys are masters of stretching the facts. But, when you look up to a leader who lies 38 times a day, that seems normal to you. If he said aliens were ready to land, you all would be staring up at the sky.
