Acosta didn't have to help. Trump was belligerent, hostile, and bulling to most of the press. He knew if he pressed hard enough, something was bound to happen that would make headlines. Acosta just happened to fall into Trump's web of hate. Once you have been belittled, besmirched, and ridiculed over and over, sometimes its hard to walk away. You feel the need to stand up for yourself. The only person guilty of anything here is Trump for being an butthole.

Watch the C-SPAN clip. It shows the same thing: Acosta physically striking and shoving the female WH intern who was just doing her job. He didn't want her to transfer the mic to the next journalist called on by POTUS, which was her job, so he shoved her away. You can't just go around shoving other people to get what you want. That's assault.

I watched that entire presser live. The only time Trump got belligerent was in response to belligerent questions. It was a 90 minute press conference. He answered many, many questions in that time and was in no way rude to everyone or even “most of” the people there.

That is what happened. Yes, his hand did come down on her arm, but that was in no way "assault", nor was it a "shove" nor a "push". The worst one could call it was "disrespectful", which it was, because he was basically moving her hand away from him with a dismissive, "Excuse me, ma'am". But it was not assault.

Trump is a thin skinned whiny baby. Even toddlers don't whine that much. He's the President, act Presidential and keep your composure. No Presidents like the intrusion of the press on every detail of everything. It's the way it is. He should be used to it by now.
Shoving someone else to get your way is indeed assault. I'd be charged with assault if I shoved an old lady out of the way so I could get ahead of her in the grocery checkout line. Acosta shoved the intern to keep her from transferring the mic to the next journalist Trump had already called on (which, incidentally is protocol and Acosta and all the other journalists knew it - all of the others complied).
