Zelva, those other things you mention don't have anything to do with forest management and more to do with you wanting this to be a political thing. What California has done, along with most other states in the West, was place limitations on clear cutting. However, clear cutting still occurs to some extent on private lands. The practice on state and Federally-owned forests has been selective cutting. This is clearly visible if you drive through the Sierra Nevada, the Cascades, or just about anywhere else. Now, as to how we got here regarding overgrowth and forests, that goes back to the Smokey the Bear campaign where the goal was to suppress all fires and part of the motivation to do that was there would be more trees to log. The end result was they ended up with a bunch of small trees to log. This was Federal policy, not that of California, Oregon, Colorado, or any other state. Also, thinning forests doesn't reduce fires. However, it does reduce the amount of fuel and temperatures. Again, you can see this from time to time in the Sierra Nevada where scattered pine and fir grow fairly spread out due to the thin topsoil on some of the granite outcrops. Lightening still sets fires that spread throughout the forests up there. Unless there is some wind to keep them going they often stop in short distances because there are quite a few gaps of solid granite surface where almost nothing grows. The difference with these fires is the wind drives them. Embers fly considerable distances and start fires ahead of the main front. This fire was wind-blown across two areas that were previously burnt. One of these areas has very little vegetation. Go look at aerial images of the area. Start at Pulga and move west toward Paradise. There are large expanses of lansdscape that are still devoid of much vegetation due to the previous fires that have gone through there, yet the fire still managed to reach Paradise, then went west of Paradise there there isn't much in regards to vegetation other than grasslands and oak, and continued to Hwy 99. The reason for this fire spreading like it did was a dry fall, wind, and very low humidity.

Zelva’s not interested in facts ... but I’ll post more from the weatherman anyway:

Quote:
President Donald Trump tweeted some incredibly ignorant things over the weekend about the wildfires that have so far killed at least 31 people in California. Firefighters have explained repeatedly why the president is so wrong, but CNN meteorologist Tom Sater broke it all down on Sunday to show why President Trump has no idea what he’s talking about.

This is wrong on so many levels,” Sater explained. “This has nothing to do with forest management.”

“We’re not looking at dense forest here,” Sater said while gesturing at a photo of Paradise, California, where the town has been completely wiped out by the fires over the past few days. “Especially down in Malibu!”

“Forest management has nothing to do with mountain winds coming down the passes at 70 miles per hour. Or humidity levels in one hour dropping Thursday from 35 percent down into single digits, dryer than most deserts,” Sater continued.

...

“It’s like taking funds from the National Hurricane Center until you stop all these hurricanes, it’s the same notion,” Sater said. “But more importantly, people died in their homes, they found bodies outside their homes, in their vehicles trying to flee, outside their vehicles just trying to run away.”

Ten years ago a coworker was complaining about the mountain area where he had a summer house. He said there were rotting trees infested with some sort of bug and it was a forest fire ready to happen. Nothing new. The state just didn't want to spend the money. Penny wise and pound foolish, as the saying goes.

P.S. Trump wasn't President then.

It's unbelievable how much Trump disrespects US politicians whether Dem or GOP but embraces Putin and other dictators with high praise. He is using his negative rhetoric to distract from all the scandals, indictments and corruption that has his name on it. I hope Mueller gives this country an early Christmas gift!

What if he doesn’t and delivers Democrats a lump of coal ? How soon until you turn on him and demand a special counsel into muller and Russia collusion ?

Back on topic though, I’ve worked in the fire service and It was impossible to ever get a controlled burn approved. There’s too many special interests involved in everything.

I believe that. My Dad was a dredger in the bay area back in the 40's. He said it was practically impossible to get the Army Corps of Engineers to approve anything.

...the ignition point for the Paradise "Camp Fire" was on FEDERAL LAND. Oops.
You do realize California has lots of dead trees and dead shrubs which Gov. Brown refuses to clear?

Right now I'm just grateful that so many people survived and that the President has signed a major disaster relief request, even if it was like pulling teeth to get him to do it. The stories coming out of Butte County are breath-takingly awful. Rescue/recovery workers are having trouble visually identifying remains because the bone fragments are so small. It's as if the entire town became a crematorium.
