There's an entire area of medicine called "nuclear medicine." Many countries, including the US, conduct research in nuclear medicine to develop treatments, procedures and diagnostic abilities using nuclear isotopes.
Fission reactors are not the only type of nuclear reactor. Breeder reactors use fusion and not fission to generate electrical power, and breeder reactors do not produce waste, because the waste of a breeder reactor is actually fuel for other breeder reactors. Uranium is not the only fuel for fission reactors. You can use Thorium, or Thorium-based salts. Gamma rays are used to detect metal fatigue in aircraft air-frames and power-plants, as well as a variety of metals used in construction.
