Pentagon fails first-ever audit

The audit, which began in December of 2017, took nearly a year to complete and cost $367 million. It is said to be the first comprehensive audit of the agency in the history of the Defense Department.

At least 2,400 Pentagon auditors surveyed the department's estimated $2.4 trillion in resources. The department says an audit will now be undertaken every year to cut down on department-wide waste.

This should have been done years ago. Now there needs to be real responsive actions to clean up the waste.

This is just something else Trump has brought forth where regular politicians would just be OK letting money go down the drain.

Don't credit Trump with things he didn't do. It was ordered in the 2010 NDAA and DoD had 7 years to prepare for the audit. In 2017, the seven years was up, hence the start of it.

In 2010, Congress included a requirement in the National Defense Authorization Act that gave the military "an extra seven years to clean up the books and get ready," as Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa said last year. That set a new deadline to be ready for an audit by September 2017.

Yeah, who didn't see that coming?

I hope no one.

There probably isn't another organization on earth that wastes more money.

You are correct. Not Trump...

It did cost much less than expected...

Motivation to audit the Fed?

At the very least those that lead that expedition get to find out where Jimmy Hoffa is buried (because they'll be next to him).

Oh please...giving a crook and grifter like Trump credit for pointing to other crooks and then attempting to walk it back while trying to give him further credit for something or other.

For those of you who think this audit revolves around spending/waste/pricing, etc. it does not. The audit was about tracking the DoD inventory of buildings, equipment, property. It also examined the automated IT systems that process the funding transactions. The audit was not about which contracts were awarded to who, how much was spent on a hammer, etc. It's a true accounting/financial audit of the systems, the GLA accounts, how the IT systems handle payments and invoicing, and tracking of property.

From Stars and Stripes:

Quote:
About 1,200 auditors from nine independent public accounting firms and staffers from the department’s Office of the Inspector General conducted 900 site visits at more than 600 department locations, including military bases, warehouses and depots, he said. The audit report is 236 pages.

“Fifty-five percent of the department’s assets and liabilities were under audit for the very first time this year,” Norquist said.

The auditors used statically valid samples to look at the accuracy and completeness of count, location, and condition of military equipment, property such as buildings, and inventory, he said. They also tested the security of the department’s business systems, such as finance and personnel records.
Quote:
The largest number of findings were related to information technology security of the department’s business systems.
Quote:
Other than IT, there were several areas of “material weakness” listed in the report, including in military pay, contractor and vendor pay, and personnel and organizational management.

However, Norquist said the auditors found no evidence of fraud.

I have said it over and over. Trump is the first President I have ever seen looking out for taxpayer $$.

I don't know which is more bizarre - that it's the first, or that it cost so much.
