I totally get that GM's problems are bigger than just a slowing auto industry. BUT.......that doesn't matter if what is pushing them off the edge is the trade wars...it means other auto companies will be feeling something.

They may not have to lay off as many but they may not expand either.

I live in a community where BMW, Mercedes and Volvo all help to make the community run. All three have said the trade wars will slow down their growth and expansion plans in the area.

Most corporate financial decisions are financial, not political. If this was a politically related decision, the rest of the automobile manufacturers would be following suit ---
It's not political -- it's based on financial. But their financial position is impacted by the tariffs.

Car Sales Are Slowing for the First Time in Eight Years | Fortune
In the last eight years, car sales have grown by an average of 5% per year, but in 2018 that rate is expected to slow to a mere 1.8% over 2017. The Wall Street Journal attributed the shift to global uncertainty over Trump’s trade policies, which are undermining consumer confidence, raising prices on raw materials, and creating new barriers to the import and export of vehicles.

And yes GM has had struggles and may be the first to feel the pinch...but it seems auto sales in general are slwoing.

This really isn't Trump's fault -- this is the world we live in. Auto industry likely headed for a downturn. Not a whole lot can be done here to remedy the situation, although I agree - this is not good news for Trump 2020. Trump can't win unless he carries both Michigan and Pennsylvania again.

I'd agree, the market has slowed down

However, as stated above GM not only has a management issue
but their quality control will continue to haunt them.

Five closed plants will have a ripple effect as suppliers and other support firms lose GM's business and shed employees themselves.

Please note that Ford has said several months back that they are going to exit much of the passenger car sector and focus on trucks. With outfits like KIA stealing the car market, the legacy manufacturers have to look for a niche where they can excel. Trucks and electrics might be where they are headed.

Auto Inudstry has been blaming Trump policies for some time.

That's all that matters -- it doesn't look good.

Trump saved them all - his tariffs worked out well for the markets in 2018 (people didn't make money - they then don't buy cars) and his rollback of MPG standards made sure we aren't going to be the innovators and suppliers to the world.

Then he added plain ole Chaos on top of that so business cannot plan...at all.

Sooner or later you in the 40% are going to figure out you've been conned...big time.
