They were just a teeny bit off.......we are now exporting oil with more being found every week......I have heard the peak oil mantra my entire life and how we were just a few years from dry holes......no different than the sky is falling because of the carbon scam.........

Sure, if you conviently ignore that we’ve had a century of engineering advances in the filed of mining, allowing us to discover and access previously unusable deposits.....
We have the technology to map any economically feasible deposits, and we are running out.

I remember (the 70s) Jimmy Carter warning the country that we would soon run out of natural gas!
OMG, how wrong was he? He set his entire agenda around this unproven, now disproven, claim.
The US is literally awash with Abiogenic petroleum.
In the last year, the wells around here were shut down. Not because they were dry, they just found better places to get the oil. Someday, they will reopen.

Tell that to the drillers who began opening up previously dry wells by the thousands to find them full and producing again, without fracking or cracking. We're talking about wells that were tapped out many decades ago.
To say we're running out is an opinion, not a fact. As the OP pointed out, supposedly smart people have been making these same claims for more than 100 years.
Could we run out? Maybe
Could it never run out? Maybe
Nobody knows for certain and anyone who claims to know is a charlatan.
Those projections were probably made on the available information at the time. New methods and discoveries changed the equation. That does not mean people were idiots.
IMO, some of the ways used to get petroleum products are not worth the cost.
If they were wrong about this in the past...theres a very good chance we are wrong today as well.
Possibly although our methods are far more refined than in the past.
