All may be funded by their respective federal governments, and other sources such as commercials and private donations (and license fees, in the case of the BBC), but they are not propaganda arms of those governments. They serve to inform and entertain their country's population. News is presented as news; opinion is presented as opinion, and entertainment is--well, entertainment.

Yet all of the above exist in a competitive world. If they promote government propaganda, in spite of what we hear from other private sources, we consumers have the option to change the channel. Nobody forces us to watch them.

It seems to me that Mr. Trump is promoting the idea of an American state-run broadcaster in order to promote whatever his administration wants to promote. In other words, propaganda. That's fine, in my view. But American consumers would have the opportunity to change the channel. More importantly, other countries would not be obliged to carry that channel; and of those that did, the channel would be competing with what their viewers might regard as more trustworthy news sources.

Be careful what you wish for, Mr. Trump. When you are out of office, as you surely will be at some point in the future, your successor may use your state-run propaganda broadcaster in a way neither you nor your supporters like.
Yep. The ABC is ferociously guarded and is anti government propaganda to a fault, some would say. If you want to see the real issues facing Australia, one watches the ABC, not the commercial networks. A bit counter intuitive if you’re not used to govt funded tv. All those institutions you’ve pointed out are national treasures who don’t show their respective countries in a “more positive light” as Trump would expect, like a totalitarian country - and if you want to see the most scathing commentary on govt, satirically speaking, those channels are where you’ll find it.

What country do you live in ? Here in America, our press is free, and that is a thorn in Trump's side.

I've never said lock her up. I love Hillary Clinton. I hope we see more of her working for the Democrats. So, as you see, you got that one wrong.

You guys know it's true. If it wasn't for the MSM, you'd shutdown. Orange Man Bad.

You do realize that he was talking about overseas audiences, right? It's kinda right there in the tweet.

(Besides, you have Sinclair Media, complete with former Trump administration officials featured in must-run segments on hundreds of local stations.)

What Trump doesn't understand is that Fox can't be given away for free overseas because it's already considered a propaganda broadcaster for his highly unpopular administration. There's no worthwhile analysis coming from commentators who strut their stuff on a campaign stage with a politician.

People outside the US just aren't that interested in seeing Fox's army of turd-buffers desperately trying to put a shine on Trump. Kinda like how no one wants to watch North Korean TV except out of a sense of morbid curiosity.

It's quite something when even Trump's most adoring cheerleader's best angle is to complain that we're even discussing the subject.

It just gets worse and worse with this maniac. One after another he advocates for policies that would slide us further into autocracy. He wants to be dictator for life.

Now apparently he is proposing an actual state tv network to carry his propaganda. Where else do we see this? Yes that's right, in virtually every country that has a dictatorship.

Just like he wants here.
It's not just Trump. There are a whole lot of people in this country, some of them posting right here on C-D that THINK they want the same thing. Never underestimate the power of propaganda. It has put many a dictator into power and it can surely happen again.

Probably has been posted, but for the record:

Wow, it's like we're all being dropped into a Sinclair Lewis novel. Apparently, it can happen here.
