A Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) ‘white paper’ [authored by ATF second-in-command Ronald Turk] correctly identifies ‘assault weapons’ as a politically contrived term with no real meaning and recommends dramatic federal law revisions in how they are regulated.
Turk’s ‘white paper’ says the agency is interested in reforms that ‘promote commerce and defend the Second Amendment without significant negative impact on ATF’s mission to fight violent firearms crime and regulate the firearms industry.’
Turk wrote that the misleading ‘assault weapons’ term to describe AK-and-AR-style rifles should be replaced with a ‘modern sporting rifles,’ to reflect how the use and popularity of these firearms has grown. In fact, he noted, their use in ‘sport shooting’ has grown ‘exponentially’ and such guns ‘are now standard for hunting activities.
...Many weapons that are "modern sporting rifles" have military ready versions, hence "assault rifle"...
"Assault rifle" is a more than appropriate term and Ronald Turk is probably a nutcase.
Wrong, military assault weapons are fully automatic (1 trigger squeeze continuous fire) Modern sporting rifles are the same as your grandfather's guns 1 squeeze 1 bullet fired, just dressed up to look more military like
ARaider, you don't know what the hell you are talking about. Nice try
The public is scared - and rightly so - by the fact that every month or so, some angry white gun lover shoots up a school, concert, church, or other public venue. Doesn't matter what the F you call the guns. The point is that we shouldn't accept a society where people being slaughtered en masse like this at places like schools is considered normal - which, thanks to gun proliferators, it is.

Almost all firearms started out as a "military" weapon.
Muskets were military weapons.
Doesn't mean anything.
What means something as far as the law is concerned is the type of fire the weapon is capable of.
Semi automatics such as the civilian AR fire one round per trigger pull.
They aren't machine guns.
